In front of the rōmon (tower gate) at Fushimi Inari Shrine in Kyoto stands a pair of fox statues.
The white fox on the left side (as you face the gate) holds a key in its mouth — a symbol of the power to unlock the rice granaries, reflecting Inari’s role as the deity of agriculture and prosperity.
